MUSEO DE ARTE POPULAR (MAP)
This museum of popular art houses 2,600 objects that testify to the creativity and ingenuity of Mexican artisans
Mexico City's first Museum of Popular Art (MAP) opened its doors on February 28, 2006, in a beautiful Art Deco building constructed in 1927. You can still make out the former installations of the fire station that occupied the premises until the 1980s, including the large exterior tower where the alarm light shone. The lower parts of the façade are decorated with pre-Hispanic motifs.
Since 2006, it has been home to this museum, whose mission is to promote and appreciate Mexican folk art, exhibiting it in lively, dynamic spaces. The museum boasts 2,600 objects testifying to the creativity and ingenuity of Mexican craftsmen, including a fine collection ofalebrijes (hybrid animals made of papier-mâché, typical of the state of Oaxaca) and several works of Huichol art. You'll be impressed by the beauty of these pieces. The museum also hosts numerous temporary exhibitions. A must-see for adults and children alike.
La noche de los Alebrijes. Every year at the end of October, a major national competition of giantalebrijes kicks off with a parade through the city's Zocalo and up Reforma Avenue to the Angel de la Independencia. The huge sculptures, with their hallucinating colors and contours, remain on display along Reforma for two weeks. If you're in Mexico City at this time of year, it's a must-see!
