PALACIO MUNICIPAL DE MORELIA
Baroque style building, occupied by an institution in charge of controlling the purchase and sale of tobacco
In the 18th century, this building was occupied by an institution in charge of controlling the purchase and sale of tobacco (the Estanco del Tabaco). The baroque style of this two-storey palace, built around an octagonal patio, is remarkable. Beyond its architectural characteristics, the building has entered the history of the country because it was here that the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla promulgated the abolition of slavery in 1810. Since 1859, it has been the seat of the municipality.
