It is the largest church in the city, built upstream from the centre on a hillock, replacing a pre-Hispanic ceremonial centre. Only the central nave is original; the rest of the building was completed in the 19th century. The tomb of Quiroga, or Mausoleo de Don Vasco, is on the left side as you enter through the west door. The most venerated figure of the Virgin is the statue of Nuestra Señora de la Salud. Pilgrimages attract believers from all over the country.
