PLAZA VASCO DE QUIROGA
One of the most beautiful squares in the country, a private house that had hosted the famous naturalist Von Humboldt in Patzcuaro
Surrounded by trees and arcades of houses and palaces dating from the colonial era, the Plaza Grande is one of the most beautiful in the country; one of its particularities is that no religious building stands on it. One of its most prestigious buildings is the Casa del Gigante, Portal Chaparro. Built in 1663, this private house (closed to the public) owes its name to the strange statue of a soldier that adorns the balconies on its upper floor. It was here that the famous naturalist Von Humboldt was welcomed on his way to the active volcano of Jorullo.
