TEMPLO DE SANTO DOMINGO
Temple completed and inaugurated in 1608 at the same time as the convent, with a sober façade compared to its interior
It was completed and inaugurated in 1608 at the same time as the convent, its main altarpiece installed in 1612, its towers completed in 1660, but its ornamentation in itself was not finalized until 1666. The final modification took place between 1724 and 1721, with the construction of the Capilla del Rosario. Its occupation by different armed factions, both dissident and regular, throughout the 19th century destroyed its magnificence: the original altarpieces were burned, the works destroyed and looted, and even lettering was installed on the altar. Since its return to the Church in 1902, many stages of restoration have given it back its present splendor.
The facade is sober compared to its interior: 26 m high, it is delimited by two towers of 35 m. The whole is built on a Latin cross plan and contains no less than ten chapels. Its magnificent stucco ceiling depicting the family tree of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, accompanied by 36 paintings depicting scenes from theOld Testament, is the pride of this church. The entire space is covered with an intricate network of motifs, sculptures and paintings from which saints, angels, cherubs and patriarchs emerge. The entire vault is riddled with circles, ovals and medallions containing representations of biblical characters in wrought iron, painting, casting, bas-reliefs covered with gold, etc. The roof of the transept crossing is decorated with reliefs representing saints from this preaching congregation.
