MUSEO DE LA FILATELIA
Unique museum to admire the largest collection of Latin American stamps in Oaxaca.
Located in front of the Jardin Etnobotanico, this small museum with a friendly history is quite unique. The Museum of Philately (the study of stamps) opened its doors in 1998 in the historic center of Oaxaca City, thanks to the initiative of philanthropist Alfredo Harp Helu. Not only can you admire the largest collection of stamps in Latin America, but you can also read some of the correspondence that Frida Kahlo had with her Californian surgeon. There is even a Penny Black, the first stamp the world has ever known issued by the United Kingdom in 1840. The mission of this amazing institution is to inform visitors about the different ideologies of the last decades, through an unpublished series of postage stamps relating historical facts both significant and unusual. But there are not only stamps in this philatelic sanctuary! Several temporary exhibitions with universal and eclectic themes such as coffee, orchids and anthropoids, to name a few, are presented simultaneously in the galleries with their contemporary architecture and surrealist decor. Its large interior garden is also an ideal place to try to revive the art of letter writing by writing a postcard to your loved ones. This card can be found in the museum's store, which is full of inexpensive stationery items. A wonderful place, whether you are a philatelist or not.
