FUERTE SAN JUAN DE ULÚA
The fort of San Juan de Ulua located in Veracruz, one of the most visited monuments of the city, a place of multiple functions
The fort of San Juan de Ulúa is one of the most visited monuments in the city. The remains of the fortress date from the period between 1552 and 1779. This place had multiple functions: pier where ships docked; fortress to defend against pirates; and even prison under Porfirio Díaz for the opponents of the regime: many prisoners succumbed to yellow fever or tuberculosis. Ironically, the same dictator was sent into exile in France from the port of Veracruz.
