SALINES
The first salt producer in the world, located in the Desierto de Vizcaino reserve in Guerrero Negro.
In Guerrero Negro, in the heart of the Desierto de Vizcaino reserve, is the first salt producer in the world. These salt flats, originally natural, were already known by Spanish and English navigators. The configuration of the land and the climate favors the deposition of salt over large areas: a layer of salt water that penetrates a flat and impermeable surface, sun, wind and lack of rainfall. The current company that exploits the salt originated in the 1950s, when American ships set out to find deposits that could be exploited to supply the California paper industry. In 1954, the company Exportadora de Sal was born, which was finally nationalized in 1973; it now operates in partnership with a Japanese company, the main export market (7 million tons per year). A visit to this immense site (90,000 hectares, 35,000 of which are production areas) will allow you to discover superb landscapes, both those of the salt flats and part of the desert and lagoon; bird watching is a significant plus. The size of the installations and the machinery of exploitation are also amazing.
The visit: for safety reasons, a guide of the company specialized in the protection of the environment will take the wheel of your vehicle to make you realize the tour; this one can last from 1:30 am to more than 3 hours, according to the sites traversed. You can reserve in advance or go directly to the guardhouse.
