Cathedral with an interior that contains interesting carved wooden altarpieces, decorated with gold leaf and multiple paintings

It was built in 1528, and its first bishop was the Dominican monk San Cristobal de Las Casas, defender of the indigenous populations. Remodelled in the 18th century, its façade is attractive and colourful, decorated with plant motifs executed in mortar. The interior contains interesting carved wooden altarpieces, decorated with gold leaf and multiple paintings. It was here that the indigenous crowd said goodbye to Bishop Samuel Ruiz in 1999 after 40 years of loyal service.
