Temple founded in the late sixteenth century, with a red tower to serve as a bell tower to the church in San Cristobal de las Casas
The Temple del Carmen was founded at the end of the 16th century and rebuilt at the end of the 18th century. The precious religious art pieces that were in it were destroyed by fire in 1993. The red tower, opposite, was built at the end of the 17th century to serve as a bell tower for the church. It is known as the Arco del Carmen (Carmen Arch) because of the embrasure that it has in its lower part. At the time, the Arco del Carmen gave access to the Convent of the Incarnation, which is now the Casa de Cultura (art gallery, library and auditorium).
