CATEDRAL DE GUADALAJARA
Cathedral built by order of King Philip II of Spain, with a facade of baroque, gothic and neoclassical styles.
A symbol of the city, it was commissioned by King Philip II of Spain and inaugurated in 1618. Its façade combines Baroque, Gothic and Neoclassical styles. The interior is Gothic, with the sacristy housing a work by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. The space features three chapels and 11 altars. Descend into the crypt to see the original foundations. The yellow tiles crowning the towers come from Sayula, 100 km to the south. Earthquakes in 1815 and 1878 damaged the church to such an extent that many parts had to be rebuilt.
