THE PINACATE AND THE GREAT FOREST OF ALTAR SONORA
Natural park located in the great desert of Sonora, and declared a biosphere reserve and world heritage of humanity.
This natural park, declared a biosphere reserve and a World Heritage site, is located in the great Sonoran desert. The site is located in the great Sonoran desert. 100,000 years ago, a gigantic volcanic eruption opened up the Gulf of California and raised the mountain ranges of the Pinacate region to a height of 1,400 m. The archaeological remains found there tell of the adventures of human groups some 20,000 years ago, when the ancestors of the Tohonos O'dham (or Papagos) lived in the heights of the Sierra Blanca (a 200-million-year-old granite formation), hunting mammals and harvesting seeds and fruits. In this miraculously desolate area, you will discover volcanoes and gigantic craters, fields of sand dunes, valleys, streams and rivers; a hostile but incredibly varied environment, home to 250 plant species and 230 animal species. Beware, the climatic conditions here are extreme: in the Valley of Hell(El Valle del Infierno), temperatures oscillate between 50°C in summer and -7°C in winter: having air conditioning in your car is not a luxury. You must have your own vehicle to cover the 80 km circuit. The route is signposted and visitors are duly registered, but remember to take plenty of water and a few snacks with you in case you have any mechanical problems. NASA astronauts come here to train regularly.
