During its golden age in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was one of the richest mines in the country, a veritable treasure trove of silver, gold, iron, copper and zinc, the extraction of which required a large workforce of natives and children working in appalling conditions. Operated between 1586 and 1960 on seven levels, the mine is now partially open to visitors.
