PALACIO DE GOBIERNO
Palace with tezontle facade, balconies in pink ashlar, decorated patios, frescoes by Osvaldo Barra Cunningham
This is the only surviving building from the 17th century, built in 1665, with a façade of tezontle (red volcanic rock) and balconies of pink ashlar. Its two patios are supported by one hundred and eleven semicircular arches, decorated with carved flowers. In addition to its architectural and ornamental beauty, the palace is home to frescoes by a Chilean disciple of Diego Riveira, Osvaldo Barra Cunningham, one of which depicts the history of the city while another is an interpretation of the colors of the Mexican flag.
