As a reminder, according to the international community, East Jerusalem is a Palestinian territory in the same way as the West Bank, and under the control of the Palestinian Authority. However, since 1967 and the Six-Day War, this territory has been under Israeli occupation, and de facto administered by the Hebrew state. For the purposes of this guide, the term "East Jerusalem" refers to the neighborhoods to the east of the Old City walls.
East Jerusalem : we restrict ourselves here to the part of the Palestinian city north of Sultan Suleiman Street and Damascus Gate. The main addresses we suggest in this area are located around Derech Shchem (Nablus Road) and Salah Ad Din Street, two major thoroughfares north-east of the Old City from the Damascus Gate, in the Bab Al Zahra district, and in the American Colony. Here you can visit the American Colony Hotel, a Turkish pasha's palace that has become East Jerusalem's most popular international hotel, and the Palestinian Heritage Museum.
Around the Kidron Valley. In this vast eastern zone, from north to south, we find Mount Scopus and the university, the Mount of Olives and the Christian pilgrimage sites, the remains of the City of David and finally Mount Zion, in the immediate vicinity of the Old City walls and the Zion Gate. These sites are spread around and in the Kidron (Qidron or Cedron) Valley, the first part of which is called the King's Valley. The Kidron Valley is often mentioned in the Bible.
