The ultra-Orthodox Jewish quarter of Mea Shearim is a plunge into another world, and another time. Here reside the haredim - God-fearing - communities inherited from Eastern Europe at the end of the 19th century. Arriving directly from these lands, or via the USA, these ultra-religious communities, many of them Hassidim, devote themselves exclusively to Bible study and reject the modern, secular world. Large families, all dressed in black, crowd these streets, speaking Yiddish and practicing strict separation of the sexes.
