The Russian enclave of the new town is dominated by the dome of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church. In 1860, the Russian Orthodox Church bought this land and built a church and a complex of buildings to welcome Slav pilgrims to the Holy Land. This neoclassical, neo-Byzantine building with its many domes houses two particularly revered icons: the Annunciation and Saint Nicholas. It still belongs to the Russian Patriarchate today.
