SANTA ANNE'S BASILICA (ÉGLISE SAINTE-ANNE)
Built in the first half of the th century and in a perfect state of conservation, this is the most beautiful example of the religious architecture of the Crusaders. In Romanesque style, it was built on the site of the "Sheep pool" or "Bethesda pool". It consisted of five porticos under which a host of disabled, blind, boiteux, behave, who waited for water boiling, were lying. Here Jesus would have healed a paralytic (Jean, 5: 1-16). Just next door would be the home of the family of the Virgin Mary, who lived there in the day and received the visit of the angel Gabriel. In 1856, the Ottoman Empire offered France the church in gratitude for its support during the Crimean War against Russia. Today, the site is administered by the Consulate General of France in Jerusalem and, on site, by the White Fathers.
