These four carefully restored synagogues were built by Sephardim from Spain. Ben Zakkai, founded in the early 17th century, is the largest and most impressive of the four. Eliyahu Hanavi, the oldest, dates from the 16th century. The other two date back to the 19th century: at the time, they were not allowed to overtake the neighboring Arab buildings, so they were built fairly deep into the ground, which enabled them to escape the heavy destruction of 1948.
