Beyond the American model, the Supreme Court plays both the role of the Court of Cassation and the High Court of Justice. It also plays the more political role of a Council of State. Any Israeli citizen can appeal to it. The Supreme Court building was inaugurated in 1992, not far from the Knesset. In 2023, when B. Netanyahu's government challenged the Supreme Court's supervisory role in favor of the executive, demonstrations broke out across the country: in the absence of a constitution, the Supreme Court is the sole guarantor of democracy.
