KOTEL TUNNELS
The first part of these tunnels which paved the foundations of the Western Wall was discovered by British archaeologists in the 1870 s. It was only after the Six Day War and the annexation of East Jerusalem that the Ministry of Religious Affairs was able to begin further archaeological work. To date, the foundations of the wall are followed by 488 metres.
The tour, which is necessarily guided, begins with the presentation of a model that reproduces the different stages of construction of the Temple. The visit continues through the discovery of several sites and archaeological exhibits updated over time. Warren's Gate (Warren's Gate) and Wilson's Arch (Wilson's Arch) dating back to the era of the Second Temple are part of these treasures. A little further, the presence of a stone block 13,6 metres long, 3 metres high and weighs 570 tonnes, continues to arouse researchers who always wonder about how it was brought here. The Hérodienne street and the Roman era near the exit are also to be seen. A synagogue is located inside the tunnel, as well as several places of prayer. The exit takes place in Via Dolorosa since 1996.
