MUSEUM OF ISLAMIC ART
The Museum of Islamic Art is located in the residential neighborhood of Talbyeh, near the Jerusalem Theater.
Considered one of the best of its kind, the museum was inaugurated in 1975 and is spread over three levels. The ensemble allows visitors to discover 1,000 years of Islamic art through a rich collection of objects from the Middle East, Spain, India and other countries. Among the variety of items on display are fabrics, clothing, jewellery, pottery, cult objects, chess sets, old playing cards, swords and other weapons. The permanent clock exhibition on the ground floor is not to be missed. This is the private collection of Sir David Lionel Salmons, a 19th century English Jewish aristocrat. Many of the pieces on display are the work of Abraham-Louis Breguet, the famous Parisian watchmaker (1823-1869). Other exceptional pieces include the watch that belonged to Queen Marie-Antoinette. Stolen in 1983, it was found in 2007, 24 years later, before being returned to the museum. Some music boxes inlaid with precious stones are also worth admiring. The prestigious collection is now kept under cover in a room with armoured doors.
Temporary exhibitions are regularly presented. The museum has a library, offers language courses and also offers educational workshops and cultural activities.
