CEDRON VALLEY
The Kidron Valley lies between the eastern walls of the Old City and the Mount of Olives, an area where history and tradition give meaning to every nook and cranny. The ancient funerary tombs and caves you'll discover in this part of the valley are those of important Jerusalem figures or their descendants, and were built during the Second Temple period. The main tombs and caves are known as the Monument of Absolom (or Yad Avshalom), dated to the 1st century BC; the Tomb of Zechariah, also dated to the 1st century BC; and the Tomb of the Sons of Bnei-Hezir, dated to the 2nd century BC. This valley is also home to Warren's Well, Hezekiah's Tunnel (claustrophobic visitors please refrain!) and the Pool of Siloam.
The ancient citadel of David takes you back3,000 years, to the time of Jerusalem's genesis. The original "Old City", the one chosen as the capital by King David, lies outside the walls of Suleiman, in the Kidron Valley. This is the site of Jerusalem's oldest settlement, the legendary City of David, protected by imposing towers and high walls. These remains, mentioned many times in the Bible, have now been unearthed and can be visited. To get there, take the Immondices gate out of the old town, and head east down the road. Take the first road to the right, which leads to the City of David.
