LOCALOCAL TLV
Tal Goring trained as an anthropologist, and her guided tour of the Yemenite Quarter and Carmel Market reflects this. Of a quality rarely found in more standard tourist tours, this plunge into the ancient but above all contemporary history of these two emblematic downtown neighborhoods offers a comprehensive panorama of their evolution over the years. In particular, gentrification and its effects are discussed in a well-documented, sensitive and non-manichean way. The entire walking tour is punctuated by tasting stops at the best stalls in the Carmel market: an opportunity to discover local spices, modern or classic street food, Yemeni soups and bakery, traditional desserts and refreshing drinks. The focus is on the shopkeepers and their stories: a showcase of local flavors, with and by the locals. The tour is very well put together, lasting a full 3 hours (come on an empty stomach!), and we can't wait for the tour of the Levinsky market, in the Florentine district, currently in preparation. The tour takes place in English, in small groups, so Tal can answer any questions. Tastings are included in the price of the tour: it's a more than complete meal, copious and absolutely delicious. Bring a hat in summer and good shoes. At the end of the tour, Tal shares an itinerary on Google maps with all the stands visited, which are sometimes difficult to find on your own.
