THE ART MUSEUM OF TEL AVIV
The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is undoubtedly the most important museum of modern and contemporary art in the country. It presents high-quality permanent exhibitions and offers temporary exhibitions, concerts, and a wide range of cultural and educational activities for a variety of audiences throughout the year. Established in 1932 in what was originally the residence of the city's first mayor, Meir Dizengoff, at 16 Rothschild Boulevard, the museum has continued to evolve and expand to accommodate the collections of donors from around the world. Today, the collections are housed in two separate buildings. The original building on Shaul Hamelech Boulevard was built in the early 1970s with spacious galleries and absolutely fantastic perspectives, especially in the entrance hall marked by the pure diagonals of the central staircase. This play of perspectives can be found in all the exhibition rooms: it is a real architectural gem. Also noteworthy in the entrance hall is the monumental work by Lichtenstein which takes up the perspectives of the museum and its main works. Here, the museum exhibits many renowned international artists: 16th to 19th century masters (Van Dyck, Rubens, Delacroix...), beautiful impressionist (Monet, Renoir, Pissarro) and post-impressionist (Cézanne, Van Gogh), expressionist (Munch) paintings.. On the modern art side, we find Picasso, Kandinsky, Modigliani, Dalí, Chagall... Finally, the contemporary part is represented by the works of Fluxus (in particular Nam June Paik) and pop art (Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein...). The museum wing, the Paul and Herta Amir building, was inaugurated in October 2011. Designed by the American architect Scott Cohen, it includes, among other things, a permanent exhibition space for Israeli art, photography, architecture and design. It also houses a library, the architecture archive and educational spaces. You will discover the entire history of national art: from the beginning of the 20th century and the first Zionist migrants to the contemporary creation of young Israeli-born artists. The creativity and excellence of Israeli photography and video art have long been praised by international critics and you will find some fine examples here. Between the two buildings there is a very pleasant sculpture garden.
