HOLON DESIGN MUSEUM
The Museum of Design opened in 2010, some ten kilometers south of Tel Aviv. This monumental work was created by Israeli architect and designer Ron Arad.
Ron Arad trained at the Beaux-Arts de Bezalel art school in Jerusalem, before learning architecture in London under the wing of the great architect Bernard Tschumi. Another leading figure in contemporary architecture, Zaha Hadid, shared the school's benches with Arad. He discovered design in Italy, working for international design greats such as Kartell and Alessi.
In addition to its exhibitions and permanent collection, the Design Museum alone is well worth a visit, because, let's face it, you don't come to the modern city of Holon by chance - you come for Arad! Scrolls of red, ochre, brown and orange Corten steel encircle the building, which houses 3,700 m² of galleries, creating a tornado-like archi-sculpture. The designer's attention was also focused on optical effects, leaving open spaces between the steel ribbons: when you look up, the blue sky is pierced by the red spirals. It's a fine example of urban design.
In addition to temporary exhibitions featuring the great masters of international design, the museum traces the history of Israeli design from 1930 to the present day, with an emphasis on contemporary creations. A varied program of cultural events is offered throughout the year.
