This was the birthplace of the Catholic Carmelite order, when, in the 12th century, Crusaders founded a monastery on the slopes of Mount Carmel. This ancient monastery is no more: in its place stands a monastery dating from 1836. The Stella Maris church, whose name means "starfish" in Latin, boasts a beautiful ceiling painted in the 1920s, depicting the prophet Elijah and the chariot of fire, and King David playing the harp. From here, you'll have a superb view of Haifa Bay: take the cable car to enjoy the panorama.
