The site has belonged to Russia since 1882, and is home to Zacchaeus' famous sycamore tree. While the museum primarily symbolizes the link between the town and the Russian Orthodox Church, it was also created to display archives concerning 19th-century Russian pilgrimages (the origin of the nearby convent) and to collect artefacts and archaeological finds discovered during excavations in the surrounding area, including a beautiful mosaic.
