HERODIUM NATIONAL PARK
At the summit of Jebel Foureidis, or "Mount of the Franks", you can see the ruins of Herodion, the sumptuous fortress built by King Herod between 24 and 15 B.C. This palace featured a colonnaded garden and Roman-style baths, walls decorated with stucco and frescoes, and floors paved with mosaics. Situated above the Judean desert, at an altitude of 758 m, the complex contains numerous remains, including baths, a swimming pool and the tomb of King Herod. The ruler is said to have conceived the site as his mausoleum, but was eventually buried in Jericho.
