IOTA

The Institut d'ophtalmologie tropicale de l'Afrique (IOTA) is a university hospital specialized in eye care and affiliated to the University of Bamako. It offers ophthalmological care to the population of Mali and the whole of West Africa, where oculo-visual problems are more frequent than elsewhere. IOTA is also a center of excellence for training in ophthalmology, optometry and ophthalmic nursing. Its mission is to provide care, training and research for the people of West Africa. Each year, IOTA sees and treats over 100,000 patients, many of whom have advanced symptoms of degenerative diseases or are already blind. The institute also performs around 6,000 cataract operations every year. IOTA plays a key role in the fight against blindness in West Africa, and is involved in prevention and training programs.
