IGLESIA Y CONVENTO DE SANTO DOMINGO

By 1678, the church and convent were at their most sumptuous, known as Arco Chato because of its very wide "flat arch", built of brick and mortar to support the heart. Its sturdiness, a guarantee of the country's privileged seismic situation, weighed heavily in the decision of the Americans, who were hesitating with Nicaragua to build the canal. But it collapsed in 2003 under the shaking of... a jackhammer, and was rebuilt identically. Adjoining museum.
