The neoclassical church and the former Jesuit convent are among the first buildings constructed after the destruction of Panamá La Vieja, but it is difficult to realize this. The complex burned down twice (1737 and 1776) but was immediately rebuilt. In 1918, the architect Vilanueva Meyer, who was also interested in the Casa de la Municipalidad, undertook a total renovation of the building, which was given a polygonal belfry that can be climbed to.
