The Plaza Mayor was the center of the city's political, religious, economic, social and cultural activities. With irregular contours, neither square nor rectangular, this central square was relatively small (69 x 57 meters) for a city of this size. It was nevertheless enlarged around 1600 to gain space to the north. On its eastern side are the cathedral and the cabildo, whose ruins can still be seen today. There are also remains of the houses built on the other sides of the square.
