According to records, the Franciscan order was the first to settle in Panama, as early as the 1520's. A stone building was built between 1589 and 1601, with large dormitories to house about 60 monks. The convent of San Francisco was expanded in the early 17th century with the construction of the church and cloister. It was one of the largest in Panama, occupying two manzanas, the equivalent of almost 5,000 square meters.
