PALACIO MUNICIPAL
Designed by the Italian architect Gennaro Ruggieri, this 1910 building is in neoclassical style, with its white color and two columns that frame the door and the large bay. It replaced the "Casa del Cabildo", the old building with arcades and balconies, where Panama's two independences were proclaimed, in 1821 (from Spain) and in 1903 (from Colombia). After the independence from Spain, the isthmus became a department of Colombia and the "Cabildo" became the "Municipal Council" of the district of Panama. Its first president was Demetrio Honorato Brid in 1892, considered one of the heroes of the Republic. A fireman, journalist and writer, he played a major role in the Panamanian separatist movement that led to independence in 1903. He is recognized as the first de facto president of the Republic of Panama. The façade of the building reads "Pro Populo Et Civitate", which means "For the people and the city". Inside is the Museo de Historia de Panamá, where documents, furniture and paintings of illustrious people are kept. The museum's collections cover the colonial period (1501-1821), the departmental period (1821-1903) and the republican period (from 1903). One room is dedicated to María Ossa de Amador, wife of Manuel Amador, the first official president of the Republic of Panama (1904-1908), who wove the first national flag, the original of which can be seen here.
