MUSEO DE ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO (MAC PANAMÁ)
Since 1983, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá, or MAC Panamá, has been housed in a former Masonic temple in the old Canal Zone, at the foot of Cerro Ancón. It's a small museum by European standards, as art and culture have long been given scant consideration by the Panamanian state. Until 1983, the museum didn't even have its own premises to house the works donated by the Instituto Panameño de Arte (Panarte), the forerunner of the MAC. Panarte (like today's MAC) was a private, non-profit organization founded in 1962 by a group of artists led by the painter Alberto Dutary (1928-1997). The current permanent collection of some 700 works is made up for the most part of donations by artists since the 1960s. At least twice a year, important works from the collection are exhibited outside the museum, to bring the artistic heritage closer to the Panamanian public, now encouraged to visit museums. The month of May is traditionally considered "museum month", with an enticing program of events in the capital's "ruta de los museos". The dynamic MAC also organizes a number of artistic encounters and temporary exhibitions throughout the year, such as the Visual Arts Biennial. Cultural programming includes workshops, conversations, concerts, performances, film screenings and guided tours for schools, universities and the general public.
