FUERTE BATERIA SAN JERÓNIMO
In the heart of Portobelo, the Bateria de San Jerónimo, also inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List in 1980 at the same time as the other fortifications of Portobelo and San Lorenzo, presents the most impressive remains of the village, and is one of the finest examples of Spanish military architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its construction was part of the defensive arsenal of Portobelo. The fortifications were intended to protect the great transatlantic trade and were undertaken between 1663 and 1670, at the time of the development of piracy. The structure was last remodeled in 1758. It is worth noting that this date is inscribed above the beautiful arched doorway that marks the entrance to the fort. The fortifications, along with the large battery of cannons pointed out to the bay, protected the gold and countless riches plundered from the New World. The spoils were stored in the city, after having crossed the entire Isthmus of Panama, before being sent to Spain. San Jerónimo, like the other fortifications of Portobelo, is freely accessible and enjoys a privileged location, offering a superb view of the bay and the Customs House. Even if you don't have much time, a visit to the site is a must during your stay in Portobelo. The site invites you to take beautiful pictures, especially at the time of the blazing sunsets.
