Trinidad & Tobago's doubles got their name in 1936, when Ashral Ali, nicknamed Choate, sold his baras (flatbreads) to young students in Princess Town, who asked him to double the dose of chana (a chickpea-based preparation). The name double was born. The Ali family has since grown considerably, and many of its members now make their living from making and selling these famous doubles. Originally an Indian dish, they have become THE quick and inexpensive dish in Trinidad, and here they are the best in the capital!
