Every year on August 1st, the country celebrates the day when slaves were freed, known as Emancipation Day.
Emancipation Day is a major national festival in Trinidad & Tobago. It was declared a national holiday in 1985 and is celebrated every year on August1. This date marks the day when enslaved Africans throughout the British Empire were finally freed from the bondage of slavery. The celebration of Emancipation Day has grown considerably in recent years, so much so that Trinidad & Tobago is now known as the Emancipation Capital of the World.
