On the southern edge of the square is the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, in Gothic style, whose foundation stone was laid in 1818. It was consecrated in 1823 after 5 years of work. It is one of the oldest existing buildings in Port of Spain. The original structure of the cathedral was made of wood, before a fire destroyed it in 1908. The cathedral was built using neo-Gothic elements from the late 1740s. The cathedral incorporates pinnacle buttresses, a steeply pitched roof and an emphasis on height.
