FORT GEORGE
A remnant of the military fortifications built in 1804, Fort George is worth a visit from St. James for its magnificent view of Port of Spain, its lush garden in the heart of nature and its picnic tables. A series of copper cannons are lined up there, as well as original cannonballs. Its strategic position served to defend the city from attacks by Napoleon's army. The signal station for the boats next to the lighthouse was designed by Prince Kofi Nti, prince of the Ashanti (Kingdom of Southern Ghana in Africa) exiled in Trinidad in 1881.
