Also known as Independence Square, this axis, which runs laterally through the southern part of downtown, was named Brian Lara Drive in 1994, in honor of the internationally renowned Trinidadian cricketer. The strip of grass that runs between the two roadways is equipped with benches and tables for playing chess or dominoes. The promenade is a favorite spot for the capital's residents to meet after work. There are usually many street vendors selling food and sweets.
