WOODFORD SQUARE
This shaded square was built as part of the major development of the city by Governor Woodford in the early 19th century. Very early on, it became the traditional place for the large protest gatherings that marked the political and social life of Port of Spain throughout the 20th century. In 1903, a large riot related to the protest movement against the increase in the price of water began there, which was suppressed in blood and cost the lives of 17 people. In the 1970s, it was a rallying point for Black Power supporters.
