SANTA ROSA CHURCH
Santa Rosa de Lima was the name of a young Peruvian Indian girl whose great piety was recognized by the Church which canonized her. She was the first Amerindian saint of the New World. The 200th anniversary of her birth fell in 1786, when the Spanish governor Chacon had a new church built at the mission of Arima. It was dedicated to Santa Rosa, who has been the patron saint of Arima ever since. The first celebration of the saint in the church took place in 1818, and since then a procession in her honor is held every year during the Festival of Santa Rosa.
