In 1700, Mayaro was totally isolated, cut off from the rest of the island by dense forest and the lack of bridges over the Ortoire River. In 1818, a steamboat that circled the island was put into service, and in 1851, a new postal service was inaugurated in Mayaro, the delivery point for the entire region. Initially installed in the village of Radix, the point of passage of the boat, a post office was built in 1921 by a certain Philippe Xavier, with a large veranda on its facade. Today it is classified as a historical monument but is in need of repair.
