North of Mayaro beach, at the junction to Cascadoux, a very rare phenomenon takes place underwater. Periodically, at this point, mud volcanoes emerge from the water to form a chain off shore but quickly eroded by the waves. The most violent eruption took place in 1911, when the volcanoes spat out mud and flames very high, accompanied by gaseous releases, and then fell back into the water very quickly.
