This very modern monument, in stark contrast to the island's classical monuments, was inaugurated in 1976 in honor of the first settlers who landed here in what they called Courland Bay. They came from Courland, part of a small European country now called Latvia. Located right next to Fort James and the Mysterious Tomb, this monument to freedom was designed and built on site by a local artist. Passing Latvians stop here to celebrate the history of their ancestors.
