At the southern entrance to Charlotteville is Fort Campbelton, also known as Campbelton Battery, in reference to the cannon battery placed there by the English in 1777 to repel the assaults of American pirates who plundered the Caribbean for its riches during the War of Independence. Tobago's wealth at the time came from sugar cane farms, and the Campbelton battery (two cannons in fact), overlooking Charlotteville, was there to protect the sugar shipments. The view is exceptional.
