Despite its small size, the island of Malé has no less than 1,200 registered taxis. The New Taxi company has a fleet of new and comfortable vehicles that run between Velana airport and the islands of Male and Hulhumale. The taxis are not metered, so it is best to check the fare before departure. You will also have to pay an extra charge for any luggage placed in the boot of the vehicle. The government has tried to implement a single fare for frequent routes, but without success.
