MULEE-AAGE PALACE
The Mulee-Aage faces the Hukuru mosque. Designed in 1913 by a Sri Lankan architect, this imposing white and blue colonial-style residence stands in the heart of a beautiful garden. It was commissioned by Sultan Shamsuddin III, who installed his son here on his return from his studies in Ceylon. He lived here from 1920 to 1934, before being sent into exile on a southern island by his uncle, who wished to reclaim the throne. The Mulee-Aage is the official residence of the presidents of the Maldives, abandoned for a time when Abdul Gayoom had a new palace built, the Theemuge.
